Comparing the Vietnam and Afghanistan wars

In the History class we studied several historical events. For our Quarterly we had to choose one of the events we studied and compare it to an event from the 21st century. I chose to compare the Vietnam War (1946-1975) with the Afghanistan War (2001-present)

Overcoming problems with presentations

INTRODUCTION

The principal aims of this proposal are to help students with their upcoming presentations by outlining any problems they may have and suggesting solutions they will find useful to overcome these problems.

CURRENT SITUATION

Comments made by several students suggest most of them are worried about their final assessment. As part of it, they have to give a spoken presentation which they claim they need help with. Following a survey among college students the following problems have been reported.

PROBLEMS STUDENTS HAVE

The main problems students have with presentations are:

• Remembering the information they have to say, causing them to get stuck.
• Getting nervous during the presentation and stammering, getting a lower mark as a result.
• Organising the information into slides and deciding what information is worth presenting.
• Dividing the information among the members of the group since always someone ends up saying more or less than others.
• Not having enough time in one class for all the students to deliver their presentation.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I would suggest the following to college students who need help with their presentation:

• I recommend that instead of trying to memorise the information, students should try to understand the topic they will talk about so then all they have to do is try to explain it.
• Students should record themselves before the presentation to listen to how they are giving the presentation and know what to improve.
• If the professor allows it, students could have their note with them as guidance for when they get stuck or write key words on the presentation to help them.
• If they get nervous they should avoid looking at people.

If these recommendations are implemented, students should be more confident when delivering an oral presentation.

El viaje en los relatos: "Interestellar"

En la clase de literatura estamos estudiando ciencia ficción y como el viaje es representado en estos relatos. A partir de un video musical que vimos sobre viajes espaciales (“Space Oddity” de David Bowie, 1969), la consigna era elegir una película, tráiler o video en donde el viaje, de cualquier tipo, sea uno de los temas principales. Para este trabajo yo elegí la película “Interstellar”. Se estrenó en el año 2014, y fue dirigida por Christopher Nolan. En esta película un grupo de astronautas debe viajar hacia un agujero de gusano, que se supone que sirve para realizar viajes en el tiempo, con el fin de salvar a la humanidad. El objetivo de la misión es encontrar un planeta para reemplazar a la Tierra que ya no es habitable. Cuando atraviesan uno de estos agujeros se encuentran en otra dimensión, en un mundo desconocido, y deben luchar para poder regresar a salvo a la Tierra. El personaje principal es Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), un piloto de la NASA e ingeniero, que ahora trabaja de granjero.

En esta película el viaje que aparece es al espacio y en una nave espacial, además es presentado como la única esperanza para la humanidad por que la comida no alcanza para todos y se van a quedar sin comida dentro de poco. También muestra que, para poder cumplir la misión, Cooper debe dejar atrás a su familia, sin saber si los va a volver a ver y realizar un viaje que no sabe a dónde lo va a llevar.  El viaje al espacio se muestra como peligroso y misterioso porque ninguno de los que viajan saben a dónde van exactamente ni están seguros de si van a sobrevivirlo. Yo pienso que hay muy pocas personas que estarían dispuestas a realizar este viaje. Su familia al mismo tiempo lo motiva a irse y hace que se quiera quedar. Hay una escena en donde se despide de su familia antes de empezar el viaje y se muestra que no se quiere separar de ellos, esto lo hace peor cuando vuelve del viaje y sus hijos crecieron sin él y ya son grandes, además el no creció nada. Hay otra escena, en el trailer, cuando le proponen realizar la misión, Cooper dice que tiene hijos y le dicen que con este viaje los va a poder salvar.
