Frozen review

I watched Disney's movie "Frozen" last year. Set in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle, the film tells the story of sisters Anna and Elsa. When Elsa's icy powers trap the kingdom in eternal winter, Anna teams up with a talking snowman called Olaf, a mountainman called Kristoff, and his loyal reindeer Sven, to find her. The most important aspects of the film were the script and plot, the visually attractive landscapes and the quality of the music.
To begin with, the script seemed rather conventional even if the plot was engaging. Not every line and scene felt essential to the story. In regards to the dialogue, it was mostly absurd although it has some sections that were witty. On the other hand, the overall story was interesting. The relationship between the characters was genuine and true to life. It had a touching message about family since it made a profound reflection on the importance of sisterhood.
The sets and songs were a particular strength of the film. It's winter landscape was stunning, with deep blue ice, lovely snowflakes ad striking snow-covered mountains. The costumes and backdrops were gorgeous and well thought out. As for the songs, they were for the most part quite excellent. They were like every other disney song, they will be stuck in your mind for days. They helped progress the story and were essential to the plot, with very few exceptions.
To conlcude, even if the movie is mostly aimed at kids and preteens, I would recommend it to everyone since you will most definitely have a good time.

Covering Letter

Dear Mr Castle,

I am writing in response to your advertisement in the Guardian newspaper for a junior research assistant at the Centre for Policy Studies. I enclosed my CV with this letter which details all my recent work experience.

This job attracted me because I know that you do a lot of good work in advising the government about what policies will work and what won't. I have just done my degree in politics and I really want to carry on working in this area and get better at this kind of research.

Just to be sure I have the right profile I have:
  • a Masters degree in Politics and Economics
  • experience on independent research

Thank you for considering this application and please don´t hesitate to contact me if you require further information.

Best wishes,
Paula Farrow

Report: How young people feel about older people and growing old

INTRODUCTION
The principal aims of this report are to discuss how young people where I live feel about older people in the community and the prospect of growing old themselves. The final section makes recommendations on how these attitudes could be improved.

ATTITUDES TO OLDER PEOPLE
I conducted interviews with some young people in my community, asking them how they feel about older people. While most answers were positive, saying they respect them and look up to them, there were some negative answers. Some of the people interviewed believe older people know nothing about current events, have no idea about life or are always lost.

ATTITUDES TO GROWING OLD
In these intervews, most people said they don't look foward to growing old, saying that they want to enjoy their lives now that they are young, that when you are older your life is boring. On the other hand, few people said they look foward to growing old since they will have a quieter life, someone to look after them, or they will be free to do what they want.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Taking all the factors mentioned into account, I would make the following recommendations:

  • For younger people to get to know older people and eliminate their prejudices.
  • For younger people to learn the benefits of growing old.
  • Younger people shouldn't be afraid to live their lives and enjoy their life even when they are older.
  • Teach young people how to handle the responsibilities they will have when they get older.
  • Teach young people to pursue their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals so that when they are older they do what they love.

Overcoming problems with presentations

INTRODUCTION
The principal aims of this proposal are to help students with their upcoming presentations by outlining any problems they may have and suggesting solutions they will find useful to overcome these problems.

CURRENT SITUATION
Comments made by several students suggest most of them are worried about their final assessment. As part of it, they have to give a spoken presentation which they claim they need help with. Following a survey among college students the following problems have been reported.

PROBLEMS STUDENTS HAVE
The main problems students have with presentations are:
  • Remembering the information they have to say, causing them to get stuck.
  • Getting nervous during the presentation and stammering, getting a lower mark as a result.
  • Organising the information into slides and deciding what information is worth presenting.
  • Dividing the information among the members of the group since always someone ends up saying more or less than others.
  • Not having enough time in one class for all the students to deliver their presentation.

RECOMMENDATIONS
I would suggest the following to college students who need help with their presentation:
  • I recommend that instead of trying to memorise the information, students should try to understand the topic they will talk about so then all they have to do is try to explain it.
  • Students should record themselves before the presentation to listen to how they are giving the presentation and know what to improve.
  • If the professor allows it, students could have their note with them as guidance for when they get stuck or write key words on the presentation to help them.
  • If they get nervous they should avoid looking at people.
If these recommendations are implemented, students should be more confident when delivering an oral presentation.

Informal letter

Dear Delfi,
I´m really sorry not to have been in touch for such a long time. I´ve been busy preparing for my exams. You told me in your email that you´re getting stressed out about your exams next week.
You asked me for tips for remembering stuff. First, I would recommend you to get some free time. You should relax your mind before you begin studying. If all you do in your free time is study, you won´t remember anything. I remember when I was studying for my last exams someone had to tell me to calm down and when I did I suddenly could remember everything.
Furthermore, I suggest you don't study everything in one day. Dividing the information will make it easier for you to remember. Your mind won't be able to concentrate if you study for long periods of time. You should take breaks every 25 to 30 minutes to distract yourself. Moreover, if you haven't already, you could try waking up earlier, you will be rested if you study before school. I find this method very effective if you are well rested. In addition, it helps to revise the parts you need more on the day of the exam.
I hope you take my tips in consideration. Please let me know if they are useful and how you do on your exams.
All the best,
Caterina

Essay writing: fitness and health

We often hear that it is important for people to be aware of what they eat and the exercise they do. In fact, since obesity is a world problem it is essential for people to know their health condition and prevent this illness. Two possible solutions for this issue could be advertisement and education.

To begin with, promoting a healthy lifestyle and sports through the media could be a solution. Using advertisement these ideas will reach more people than other methods. Most people watch TV or they will see posters when they go outside. On the other hand, making this campaign would be too expensive.

Another method to solve this problem is to use education. If children are educated from a young age on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, they will be used to it when they grow up and it will be easier for them to implement. Although this is a good methodm the only problem is that it takes the kids a long time to learn.

As a conclusion, I believe both methods are necessary to solve this problem since advertising could be aimed to adults and education to young children. In addition, education will definitely be the most effective in the long run because when the kids grow up they will still use everything they learned.

Essay writing : use of private cars in the city centre

In writing class we are working on essay writing and their structure. For this class we had to write an essay on the importance of reducing the amount of private cars being used in the city centre.

We often hear that there are too many cars being used in the city centre and that something should be done about it. Not only do cars produce air and noise pollution but they also cause accidents and traffic jams when roads are not properly prepared. In this essay I will discuss two possible methods to discourage the use of private cars.

One of the methods could be for the government to invest money in the improvement of public transport. If people notice the quality of public transport is improved, they won't feel the need to use private cars. In this case, as more people than usual will be using public transport to travel, it has to be well prepared and adapted for that number of people.

Additionally, educating people on this issue is another method to solve the problem. If people learn why the use of private cars has a negative impact on the city and their lives, and they are given a good alternative they will,  most likely, change their preferred means of transport. On the other hand, money has to be invested for this method to be effective, and the government might not want or be able to.

As a conclusion, I believe both methods should be used to reduce the amount of private cars being used in the city centre. If combined, education will teach people about the advantages of public transport and they will switch to it if it is in good conditions.

Literary essay: "the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde"

In the class of L/L writing we learnt how to write a literary essay and after doing some activities we wrote one based on the theory we had about "The strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Literary essay: "the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde"

The story "The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson, talks about the life of Henry Jekyll, a scientist, who believes that human has a double personality and to prove his point of view he creates a potion to separate them. As a result he turns into his evil side, Mr. Hyde, who takes him to his death. This essay will explain what Jekyll's house and laboratory and Hyde's physical appearance symbolises.

In the book, Jekyll's house and laboratory are related with Jekyll and Hyde. Jekyll's house, which is well-appointed and it says it has "a great air of wealth and comfort", represents Jekyll because Jekyll is neat and his house is perfectly tidy. His laboratory, described as "a certain sinister block of building", represents Jekyll bad side, Hyde, because Hyde as the laboratory he is ugly, disrupted, and unclean, and there is a connection between both buildings that symbolises the connection Jekyll and Hyde have as they are the same person.

Hyde's physical appearance, ugly, deformed, small, shrunken and hairy represents something. "I never saw a man I so disliked [...] He gives a strong feeling of deformity" said utterson, his ugliness and deformity symbolises his lack of moral and ethics, his small stature represents that he, as Jekyll's bad side, has been repressed from growing for many years, and his hairiness symbolises his animal instinct and the fact that he is immoral, he commits crimes because he enjoys it.

As a conclusion, jekyll's house symbolizes Jekyll and his laboratory simbolized hyde, the connection between the house and the laboratory symbolizes the connection Jekyll and Hyde have, and Hyde's physical appearance symbolizes different things about his personality, we think this book tought us we do not have to try to be what we are not and that things are not always what we think they are, things are not always going to happen as we think, things can go wrong or change.

The disappearance

In the class of L/L writing we learnt how to write a short story, after making some activities we had to write a short story that ficished with the phrase, "That was the last time I saw him/her" This is my short story:

The disappearance
He is sitting there in the same cramped chair, waiting the same gorgeous girl appeared. As the last time. He is sitting there. Now he is 16, he is older, now he looks filthy, he needs to have a good bath. Totally not as the last time. His hair is shabby, but he looks charming. He is looking at the floor, depressed, he knows why he is there, but not what is going to happen.
Surprisingly a door, which definitely wasn’t there before, opens and lights the room. He wishes he could cover his eyes, but he can’t because he is tied to the chair. A tall, peaceful man enters the room through the recently opened door.
“Hello, George. You are here because we know you, we know what you were going to do”. Explained the man.
“But wh…”.Tried to say George
“Please don´t interrupt and let me finish”. Continued the man “ I am Alexander I think you know me”. George looked at Alexander.
“Yes I know you”. George whispered, Alexander couldn’t hear him “we took you here, to our special room, as the last time, because we need you , George, to tell us something important, something important, something nobody, except for you knows. You know what we are talking about, don’t you? ”. Said Alexander
“Well, first of all I perfectly know what it’s that you want me to say”, George commented “But I don’t know. I also want to know. I miss her so much, I don’t know where they are. I looked for them for seven months but I can’t find them! “, Shouted George crying.
“You are lying! Please George, you know perfectly well where they are but you are protecting them. Why are you protecting those traitors? They betrayed you! “, Accused Alexander.
“They aren’t traitors! They are my friends and I don’t even know if they are alive!”
“Ok George. All the same, we need you. Please come with me”, Alexander unleashed George from the chair
Both walked through the door. When they got out George saw the room was totally deserted, except for some luxurious computers and desks in the spacious room.
“This is the main room, where we see everything that you do”, explained Alexander.
“Everything I do”, Asked George.
“Yes, we have been following you to know where your…”friends” are hiding. But don’t worry we haven’t found anybody”
Alexander took a gun and pointed at George “George! I’m not playing. Tell me now where they are! It’s not a joke. Tell me!”
“Alexander please understand. I also want to know where they are and if they are alive but I don’t know, I’m not lying. We were looking for the man that robbed the bank with costumes in the street when someone came and captured them but, I don’t know why, they left me alone. I couldn’t do anything to save them. They were too fast. I waited for two hour for someone to appear but nobody came. I am telling the truth” replied George.
“Are you sure this is the truth? If I ever discover that you are lying to me, I am going to kill you and all your new friends. As the last time”. Said Alexander
“You won’t have to do it. That was the last time I ever saw them”

Review: The lion king

The lion king is a very interesting film, directed by Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, and was influenced by the play Hamlet. The story takes place in Africa, and tells the story of Simba, a young lion, who learns about "The circle of life".

Simba is going to be the next king, but his jealous uncle, Scar, who wants to be the next king and get rid of Simba and his father, Mufasa. With his childhood friend, Nala, Timon, a suricate, and Puma, a warthog (wild pig from Africa), Simba has to recover his throne and defeat Scar.

It is a moving story, full of happy and sad moments. It is a very goos idea to watch it in family. It is not a deppressing story, and Timon and Pumba give the story a funny atmosphere.

Don´t miss it. I really recomend it. It is woth seeing it!

Summary: The lion king

Simba is a little lion that will have to become king after his father, Mufasa. He spends his days playing with his friend, Nala. His father teaches him about "The circle of life and how to become a good king. Mufasa has a brother, Scar, who wants to be the king, so he has to make Simba and Mufasa dissappear, for this reason, he takes Simba, with the help of his hyena friends Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, into a path where a stampede kills Mufasa while trying to save his son. After that he is responsible for the death of his father so he goes into exile. There he meets Timos and Pumba. They adopt their "Hakuna Matata" (no worries) attitude. Simba grows and turns into an adult. One day, a beautiful young lioness, who is his cildhood friend, Nala, tells him that Scar is the king and that they are suffering. With the help of Rafiki, a monkey, Simba realizes that he has to go and claim that he is the king. He fights against Scar and recovers his throne.

discovering a new place

In the class of Language through literature writing we learnt how to write a description of a place, we had to choose a place that we liked and write a description.

Italy is a peninsula located at the south of a Mediterranean Sea in Europe. Its capital is Rome. It has the fourth largest population of Europe with 60.0 people living there, and the climate is usually sunny.

Among all the beautiful and historical places that you can visit, the ones that I like the most are The Colosseum and the Tower of Pisa although nowadays you can`t enter to any of the two. I would also like to visit the Vatican where the Pope lives.

The only bad point of going to Italy is that as many people visit it you will have to wake up early if you want to avoid lines, especially if you go in April, mid July, September or October that is the season when most tourists decide to visits Italy.

Apart from the Colosseum, the Tower of Pisa and all the historical places that you can visit Italy is also a very good place for shopping for example Florence is a well known place because of fashion designers, and gold. To buy good gifts you can go to the artisan shops in Perugia.

As a conclusion, Italy is a very good place to shop, learn about some history and have a nice time.

Informal Letter.

Dear Hyde,
I'm writing to you because I wanted to know if we could meet at the GOODBP (General Organization Of Bad People).
I know that you are always busy so tell me any day at any time and we meet. We have a very good plan to keep you being Mr.Hyde, we have discovered that mixing some of you hair with a specific juice that i can't mention here, we can invent a potion that keeps you being you for ever and ever.
But when we finish, we are going to have fun. We can go to drink some beer and scare some little children and other funny things that I know you like very much. This is to relax and to see if the potion have secondary effects.
This is all I wanted to tell you, I hope I see you soon!
OMG!
Raul.
