Report: How young people feel about older people and growing old

INTRODUCTION
The principal aims of this report are to discuss how young people where I live feel about older people in the community and the prospect of growing old themselves. The final section makes recommendations on how these attitudes could be improved.

ATTITUDES TO OLDER PEOPLE
I conducted interviews with some young people in my community, asking them how they feel about older people. While most answers were positive, saying they respect them and look up to them, there were some negative answers. Some of the people interviewed believe older people know nothing about current events, have no idea about life or are always lost.

ATTITUDES TO GROWING OLD
In these intervews, most people said they don't look foward to growing old, saying that they want to enjoy their lives now that they are young, that when you are older your life is boring. On the other hand, few people said they look foward to growing old since they will have a quieter life, someone to look after them, or they will be free to do what they want.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Taking all the factors mentioned into account, I would make the following recommendations:

  • For younger people to get to know older people and eliminate their prejudices.
  • For younger people to learn the benefits of growing old.
  • Younger people shouldn't be afraid to live their lives and enjoy their life even when they are older.
  • Teach young people how to handle the responsibilities they will have when they get older.
  • Teach young people to pursue their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals so that when they are older they do what they love.
